Below are sample instructional activities that learners will interact with and complete.

The activities are presented in an absorb-do-connect framework, created by William Horton (2012) in order to sequence the activities in a comprehensive manner through a specific objective that learners will accomplish.

These activities also adhere to best practices in Universal Design (seen here:
http://udlguidelines.cast.org).  The first activity provides perception support through legibility and coherence. The second activity provides options for expression and communication, encouraging learners to be creative. The final activity provides an option for comprehension, and serves as a reference tool for learners as they transfer their knowledge to their work.

These specific activities are meant  for use with the following enabling objective: Given a 50-minute class period, the teacher will determine when group work is appropriate and create breakout rooms for student discussions.

Absorb Activity: This PowerPoint presentation is designed to help students absorb the factual information related to the objectives. It takes into consideration the prior knowledge of the target audience, and keeps the information legible and succinct in line with best practice.

Do Activity: This activity, also serving as a summative assessment, aligns with best practice by asking the learners to create an authentic work sample. It is a task where they put the skills they have learned in the absorb stage of learning to use, and are given an opportunity to be creative as well as collaborate with members of their professional learning communities. This activity offers two very important benefits of formative assessment; it builds confidence in the learner concerning their abilities and allows them to identify any areas of growth before they apply it in their work setting. The second link provides a rubric for this summative assessment.

Connect Activity: This final activity serves as a "connect"  to the learner's job performance. This job aid serves as a point of reference that the learners can use in order to ensure that the objectives that they have mastered can be used in a timely manner, and allows them to quickly focus their attention to other matters at hand.
